"Investing should be more like watching paint dry or watching grass grow. If you want excitement, take $800 and go to Las Vegas."

Investment Management

  • Tailored Financial Planning offers investment account management through our custodian(s), Betterment for Advisors and Charles Schwab.

New accounts of various types can be opened at the custodian where you maintain access and control of your funds while Tailored Financial Planning is given permission to choose investments and trade on your behalf.

I select appropriate investments given your situation, monitor the investments throughout the year, rebalance as needed and provide performance reporting. Your custodian provides reports that summarize the changes in your accounts during the month, quarter or year.

  • I believe that the best way for individual investors to compound wealth over time is with a low-cost, low-turnover passive investment strategy.

After fees and expenses, very few money managers who pick stocks can consistently outperform the market, especially over long periods of time. Passive investing is choosing to accept the returns that the market offers and instead focusing your efforts on what you can control: behaviors that give you a good chance of building wealth over time. Behaviors like consistently saving and investing every month, limiting your costs paid in fees and taxes, and being willing to invest more when the markets are down.

  • Based on your risk tolerance (how much risk you feel comfortable taking) and risk capacity (how much risk you can afford to take based on time horizon and spending needs), I will design a portfolio that is aligned with your goals and possible desire to invest in securities that make a social impact or exclude certain types of companies who are not environmentally or socially responsible.

I use a risk tolerance assessment that helps me objectively measure your preference for risk and comfort with investing to tailor your investment education. Portfolios are rebalanced back to targets annually or when there are large money flows.

Portfolios are managed to be tax-efficient. I use strategies like tax-loss harvesting and capital gains management so you don’t have to pay more than your fair share.

  • I am proud to offer investment choices that take into account ESG: environmental, social and governance factors. ESG investing refers to a set of standards for a company’s behavior used by socially conscious investors to screen potential investments.

This could mean screening “out” a company that produces fossil fuels, or screening “in” a company who is committed to gender diversity on its board. Whether it is climate impact, social impact or both, I can help create a portfolio that is aligned with your personal values.
